William and Mary Detachment

About Us

The W&M Detachment of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is an opportunity for all students who seek to serve their country and community, gain valuable hands on experience while in college, become a better leader, form lasting relationships with friends and shipmates, save lives, or spend your weekends on the water, in the air, or anywhere else the Coast Guard Auxiliary serves, you have come to the right place.

The Detachment is a part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Flotilla 67 in Williamsburg, VA.  As a Detachment member, you will be a full member of Flotilla 67, entitled to all of the opportunities and responsibilities thereof.  You will not be a part of the active duty Coast Guard, you will not attend a “boot camp” or any other military entrance training program, you will never be activated or deployed for any military or law enforcement action, and you do not incur any obligation whatsoever for future military service.  You will not be in the military, but will be a member of the world’s premier uniformed civilian maritime force.  You will be a student and an Auxiliarist, and you will train and serve your community in the Coast Guard’s humanitarian and homeland security missions here at home.

As an Auxiliary Coastguardsman in the Detachment, you will have the opportunity to learn and grow through the challenges that await you, and you will also have a great time as you become close friends with your shipmates at William & Mary and throughout the Coast Guard.  In turn, you will be expected to participate in the Detachment program, including regular attendance at meetings and events and fulfillment of the duties for which you volunteer.  When you wear your uniform, you represent the Coast Guard, the Auxiliary, and the Detachment.  Established on August 4th, 1790, the Coast Guard is the nation’s oldest continually existing maritime force.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary, established on June 23, 1939, is the world’s finest all-volunteer organization.  As a member, remember that all that you do must reflect the Coast Guard’s core values of honor, respect, and devotion to duty.
